For this image I had several ideas about what this image was implying. One of the main themes I discussed was about "The American Dream." The image could suggest that since the two kids are looking upon some of America's greatest leaders, their future success could be predicted. They are located at the base of a mountain, in which this could represent both of their lives and their future "paths" to the top. As they "climb” the mountain called Life, they could, or perhaps will, reach greatness as these American leaders once did. I also discussed the similarities and differences between the kids as well as their relationship. The image could suggest that they are siblings, friends, future partners, or even future leaders. I wrote that even if they have differences it does not mean that one kid has more potential than the other. This touches on the issue of equality in American society between men and women. This image strongly suggests no matter the gender, both can achieve greatness and equality within the United States. 




I had several observations about what this image is representing. One of the main themes I observed was light vs. dark. I thought that each person’s shadow could represent the darkness that they have experienced in their life. The length of the legs could show healing, maturity, and growth from their past. All of their heads are located in the lightest part of the photograph which could symbolize that they are “bright” thinkers. This photo was taken in Africa while I was on a mission trip. As the lightest part of the photo is behind all of the individuals, we are “lighting” the surroundings by helping those people in poverty. I also touched on the shadows of the people. Though we cannot define each individual’s ethnicity, gender, or other characteristics, we can suggest that they’re all making a difference in helping the people in poverty.

Mark Making Project

I  thought this project would be easier than it was. It was hard to calm my mind to draw the first instinct instead of something specific. Overall, I enjoy the drawings I created with my eyes close over the drawings with my eyes open. I especially love the drawing of the image of the person. I was imagining something in my mind yet the physical image was completely different. I think that this also shows that you don’t have to have your eyes open to create something beautiful. Even the drawings I created with my eyes open are pretty abstract since I allowed my mind to wonder. I believe that more art forms should allow this perspective because it really reveals the artist’s mind and their thoughts about what is going on in their life.

Masking Torn Paper Edges

I really liked this project. It was simple yet an extremely beneficial skill to know for future design processes. Even though the video was a bit slow, I enjoyed how he was figuring it all out as he was going. It was really relatable to the viewer as we were doing the same thing. I really liked creating this torn paper. I ripped up a piece of paper that was sitting on my desk that had text on the other side. I really liked how the image of the torn paper turned out. It reminded me of an old letter and I even got an effect of shading with just the lighting that made it look like a vintage piece of paper. I believe that these characteristics of the paper make it a lot more interesting to look at than just a simple blank piece of paper. I also chose this deep red color not just for contrast but also to conform to the “theme” of the vintage paper. Obituary Project

For this project, it was very difficult to transfer my vision of the obituary onto an existing idea...especially in regards to the photographs. I wanted to show his childhood, what he "looked" like when he passed away and where he is now. In the obituary, it states that, '"he suffered as a young man, and he did what he had to do to escape it."' His sister further explains that she revealed the siblings experienced physical abuse and a "chaotic childhood" that "forced them to conceal." With this photograph, I find that there is a connectivity between the two siblings. As with vintage photographs, most of the subjects do not smile. Yet taking a closer look, you can sense that there is a lot of pain behind the photograph itself. I thought this was a perfect example of the sister and the obituary's childhood.
