How To: Gradient Tool


This tutorial was a good reminder of how to do gradients in Illustrator. I have experience with illustrator so this was a fun project to do. Even though it’s constructed of very simple shapes, the gradients make it a lot more artistic. It brings a range of large diversity of colors into the stars and overall image. Without the gradients in the background and in each shape, it wouldn’t have as much of an artistic effect on the viewer.  I decided to do something different than the rectangle and the circle in the tutorial because I wanted to make it look a little more interesting. I believe that some of the best, most interesting art can be made out of the simplest shapes. I think that Illustrator and the usage of gradients are a great resource we can use in the real world. For example, using tools like the gradients would be an easy and affordable way to create a company’s logo.

Sign Language as Image Project

"Man of ASL" For the sign language project, I recreated an image of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet using the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet. I wanted to create a narrative in my image of the importance of Gallaudet’s efforts during his lifetime for the deaf community. Gallaudet was responsible for the first free public school for deaf children in Hartford, Connecticut. He was inspired by his neighbor’s deaf daughter, Alice. As a minister, he wanted to minister to her and he traveled overseas to learn how to communicate to her as well as the deaf community in the United States. Once he returned to America, he taught Alice as well as other deaf children around the US. He also inspired several other schools to open around the country. Cut Out Text Effect

I wanted to do something different with my cut out text effect. I decided it would be really cool to do this effect with the text of University of Tampa. I attempted to copy the same font as the UT logo, but the letters were too small where you couldn’t make out the image in the background. So by experimenting a little, I decided to do an old typewriter font for the text. I thought that it was thick enough to be able to see the image behind, which is the iconic Plant Hall. I also picked a typewriter font because it reminds me of the font that was used during the time period of the  late 1800s to early 1900s around the time when Plant Hall was built. I think that bringing some vintage effects into modern technology as this project is a really unique way to recontextualize the old with the new ways of art and technology.

Masking Torn Paper Edges

I really liked this project. It was simple yet an extremely beneficial skill to know for future design processes. Even though the video was a bit slow, I enjoyed how he was figuring it all out as he was going. It was really relatable to the viewer as we were doing the same thing. I really liked creating this torn paper. I ripped up a piece of paper that was sitting on my desk that had text on the other side. I really liked how the image of the torn paper turned out. It reminded me of an old letter and I even got an effect of shading with just the lighting that made it look like a vintage piece of paper. I believe that these characteristics of the paper make it a lot more interesting to look at than just a simple blank piece of paper. I also chose this deep red color not just for contrast but also to conform to the “theme” of the vintage paper.
