Emotional Response

Image
The first image is the original image that I used as my inspiration for my other images. I took this image inside a cathedral in Budapest, Hungary. It was possibly the most gorgeous churches I have ever seen. The second image is the spiky and brittle image. I actually had a tough time creating this image because I really wanted to go with the curvature of the architecture in the original image. It was tough to create the entire image out of just straight lines, but I really enjoyed how it turned out because it gave it a more abstract concept of gothic architecture. The third image was my soft and pliable image. I used a different concept of color in this image. I used blue, black and yellow as my only colors to recreate this image. I really wanted to have soft colors and soft shapes to demonstrate the fluidity of the architecture inside the church. The forth image I used the Japanese pen and ink to create a sinister and creepy look. As churches are most beautiful, th...

Sign Language as Image Project

Image
"Man of ASL" For the sign language project, I recreated an image of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet using the American Sign Language (ASL) alphabet. I wanted to create a narrative in my image of the importance of Gallaudet’s efforts during his lifetime for the deaf community. Gallaudet was responsible for the first free public school for deaf children in Hartford, Connecticut. He was inspired by his neighbor’s deaf daughter, Alice. As a minister, he wanted to minister to her and he traveled overseas to learn how to communicate to her as well as the deaf community in the United States. Once he returned to America, he taught Alice as well as other deaf children around the US. He also inspired several other schools to open around the country. I thought that his story was incredibly inspiring so I made an art piece out of his figure. I used images of the ASL alphabet in Photoshop as the main lines and texturing. Specifically, I used the letters from his last name Galla...

How To: Gradient Tool

Image
This tutorial was a good reminder of how to do gradients in Illustrator. I have experience with illustrator so this was a fun project to do. Even though it’s constructed of very simple shapes, the gradients make it a lot more artistic. It brings a range of large diversity of colors into the stars and overall image. Without the gradients in the background and in each shape, it wouldn’t have as much of an artistic effect on the viewer.  I decided to do something different than the rectangle and the circle in the tutorial because I wanted to make it look a little more interesting. I believe that some of the best, most interesting art can be made out of the simplest shapes. I think that Illustrator and the usage of gradients are a great resource we can use in the real world. For example, using tools like the gradients would be an easy and affordable way to create a company’s logo.

How To: Pen Tool

Image
Spiderman is one of my favorite superheroes of all time, but I wanted to do something different for my project than the traditional Spiderman look. I was inspired by Spider-Gwen’s color scheme and decided to conform Spiderman’s aesthetic with Spider-Gwen. I really liked how it turned out. It definitely took some time but the tutorial was pretty easy to follow. I also decided to add some more gradients to the overall image to make it look more realistic and more interesting. Since I have had experience in Adobe Illustrator, specifically with the pen tool, this project was easy. It also reminded me how we can truly create our own versions of anything. We could find an image or drawing of anything and re create it using Illustrator. We can turn anything into Digital Art and put our own stamp on it.

Text As Image Project

Image
I decided to write “Your past doesn’t have to define you.” for this project. I really wanted to do something ambiguous but also personal for this assignment. I have had a lot of pain in my past and I’ve noticed it can effect who I am today. Yet, I’ve been learning that my past doesn’t have to define who I am today. I am learning that I can take what I have gone through and realize that without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I know that it will allow me to have a deep story that could perhaps impact or inspire others one day. I decided to use my own image of the Roman Colosseum when I studied abroad in Italy last year. I wanted something that suggested the idea of “past history” and that could also be a main canvas for the text. The Roman Colosseum is one of the world’s most iconic historical sites. Because of this, the viewer - universally- will recognize this ancient building and connect the text to the image. I also thought about all the gladiators and people that were kil...

Masking Torn Paper Edges

Image
I really liked this project. It was simple yet an extremely beneficial skill to know for future design processes. Even though the video was a bit slow, I enjoyed how he was figuring it all out as he was going. It was really relatable to the viewer as we were doing the same thing. I really liked creating this torn paper. I ripped up a piece of paper that was sitting on my desk that had text on the other side. I really liked how the image of the torn paper turned out. It reminded me of an old letter and I even got an effect of shading with just the lighting that made it look like a vintage piece of paper. I believe that these characteristics of the paper make it a lot more interesting to look at than just a simple blank piece of paper. I also chose this deep red color not just for contrast but also to conform to the “theme” of the vintage paper. I thought that this deep red could signify a stamp or a liquid mold as well if someone were to write on it. I also think that my drop shado...

Cut Out Text Effect

Image
I wanted to do something different with my cut out text effect. I decided it would be really cool to do this effect with the text of University of Tampa. I attempted to copy the same font as the UT logo, but the letters were too small where you couldn’t make out the image in the background. So by experimenting a little, I decided to do an old typewriter font for the text. I thought that it was thick enough to be able to see the image behind, which is the iconic Plant Hall. I also picked a typewriter font because it reminds me of the font that was used during the time period of the  late 1800s to early 1900s around the time when Plant Hall was built. I think that bringing some vintage effects into modern technology as this project is a really unique way to recontextualize the old with the new ways of art and technology.
